We don’t try to rush you through this process. but instead, we keep you informed of each action we’re going to take and if you need us to pause for a moment, that’s what we’re going to do. It’s important to us to listen to your needs and help you get through each procedure comfortably. It is very likely that this procedure will be no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.
This type of procedure is called “endodontics” treatment. “Endo” comes from the Greek work for “inside” and “odont” refers to teeth. So it’s treatment to the inside of your teeth.
After carefully x-raying the tooth to be treated, our dentists will examine the image to ensure we know exactly how the tooth is shaped all the way down to the tip of the root. We then place a rubber sheet around the tooth to be treated to keep the rest of your mouth clean. Your tooth and the surrounding area will be numbed.
An opening will be drilled in the top of your tooth, just like when you are getting a filling. But in this case, all damaged tissue in the nerve canal in the middle of the tooth pulp will also be cleaned out, then sterilized. There could be one, two or more root canals in each tooth.
After the tooth pulp has been cleaned and sterilized, our dentists will then fill the area with sterile material. In our practice in Stockton, CA, we treat all the teeth from your front teeth through the premolars. When molars need to be treated, we refer our patients to a highly trusted dentist we have worked with for many years.
Your tooth and the area around it may be in a sore condition for a few days. Most patients experience some aching during the recovery process, but for most people it’s minimal and should go away quickly. Be gentle with that tooth and avoid biting or chewing anything tough for a while.
A tooth that receives root canal therapy will gradually get more brittle so it needs protection. We’ll schedule you for an appointment to place a crown over this tooth to extend its life for many more years.
